With a good luck penny from his father, Donald G. Moriarty enrolled in UMass Amherst 56 years ago. The campus was the most affordable for Donald, one of eight children and the first in his family to attend a four-year college.
Upon graduation in 1960, Donald enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was on duty along the African coast as colonies claimed their independence. Stateside, he became a banker and then proprietor of small businesses in Brimfield, Mass.
Gratitude for UMass Amherst has been a mainstay in Donald's life. He chaired the Class of 1960 50th class reunion gift committee, which raised $1.3 million to create the Million Heirs Scholarship Endowment. Part of his contribution came in the form of a charitable gift annuity, which provides him with fixed lifetime payments, charitable tax deductions and the satisfaction of a legacy for his beloved UMass Amherst.
